Remodelors Council
|
|
|
 |
| Overview |
PRC was formed to promote and conduct quality and ethical business practices for the Virginia Peninsula’s remodeling and renovation industry. The Council takes pride in its membership of the area’s most knowledgeable and experienced remodeling and renovation firms which meet strict guidelines on competence, financial stability and length of time in business. The Peninsula Remodelors’ Council is the first place to look for finding a reputable firm to remodel or renovate your home.
The Peninsula Remodelors Council, which is affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Remodelors Council represents and serves the interests of the local remodeling industry. Members have access to industry-leading programs in education, networking, marketing, advocacy, and recognition of excellence, along with the tools they need to build and improve upon their remodeling businesses. These programs include:
- Certified Graduate Remodelor (CGR)
CGR is the only professional designation program in the
industry that emphasizes business management as the key to success in
the remodeling business. Currently there are more than 1,000 CGRs and
another 2,000 working toward certification. To become a CGR, remodelors
are required to take the Professional Remodelor Experience Profile (PREP),
which is an assessment tool that determines their personal course of
study, and to complete the prescribed number of courses. Council members
receive a substantial discount on CGR fees.
- Legislative Advocacy
The Council represents the business interests of Remodelors
at the local, state and national levels with the support of PHBA’s, HBAV’s
and NAHB’s governmental affairs activities. The Council works in concert
with these parent organizations to advocate laws and regulations that
promote remodeling in such areas as lead abatement, OSHA, labor and licensing.
- Consumer Information
The Council also offers consumers a number of services to help ensure their remodeling or renovation experiences are good ones. These include:
- Education. Well informed consumers need to know what to look for when selecting a reputable contractor. They should have a realistic concept of the finished project and be knowledgeable of their legal rights when entering into home improvement contracts. As a result, the PRC holds numerous consumer related seminars and programs for the public at various times of the year and has a speakers bureau for groups or organizations concerned with these issues. PRC has also developed information that outlines specific questions consumers need to ask for interviewing and selecting a qualified contractor.
- Referral Services. Homeowners interested in specific remodeling services or materials can obtain a list of Remodelor Council Members who subscribe to the PRC Code of Ethics.
- Code of Ethics. All PRC Members are pledged to:
- Serve the best interests of their customers.
- Accurately and honestly describe the price, materials, and quality workmanship used in their jobs.
- Use only materials equal to or better than the quality of those specified in the contract.
- Start the construction process as soon as feasible upon award of contract and proceed diligently to completion of the project without unnecessary delays.
- Conduct their business operations in a manner that will reflect credit upon the remodeling industry in general and the Council in particular.
- Issue a warranty covering materials and workmanship for a one (1) year period after completion of the work, with the exception of damage caused by normal shrinkage wear and tear, abuse or acts of God.
- Consumer Mediation. If, during the course of the remodeling project, the consumer feels that there is a problem with workmanship and/or materials as stipulated in the Council member’s contract, PRC will mediate the concern by commissioning three of its members who will impartially employ industry standards and make recommendations to resolve the issue.
- Community Involvement
As a concerned group of professionals PRC believes in giving something back to the community. For over ten years, PRC has been an avid supporter of the Peninsula Habitat for Humanity and has donated thousands of dollars in man hours and materials to this worthy cause. Other activities have included overseeing the renovation of the area’s first Homeless shelter and continued support of other area shelters with yearly contributions.

Choosing a Remodelor |
Below is a list of questions that you will want to ask
when choosing a Remodelor:
- When should I consult or choose a Remodelor?
When you find that your home no longer meets your needs, but you don’t want to move.
- How do you find a reputable Remodelor?
The best way to start your search is to call your local Remodelors Council. They will provide you with a list of member firms in your area.
- How can I proceed quickly in selecting a Remodelor?
Don’t hurry. Take your time in making a selection. Most problems occur
when consumers fail to properly investigate a Remodelor before hiring
them.
- How can I select the best Remodelor for my project?
Ask for references then contact them. All reputable remodeling firms will be happy to provide you with a list of previous clients for you to call.
- Should I hire a Remodelor or subcontract the work myself?
Consider the time involved, your ability to determine the subcontractors’ qualifications and abilities and your familiarity with local building codes and zoning requirements. Unless you are familiar with the construction process and its many pitfalls, your remodeling project could cost you more in the long run.
- How can I determine the costs?
Be sure to seek bids only from reputable firms. Less qualified companies may present a bid that is too low and later claim it did not cover some aspect of the job. Make sure that you have a professional set of plans and specifications which is the basis of the contract. This will assure you that the work is aimed toward the anticipated results.
- How important is a written contract?
Very. It should specify such items as the work to be
completed, when payments are to be made and the time frame in which the
job is to be completed. Make sure you review it with the Remodelor and
look for and understand any special clauses or provisions.
- How should I handle changing work in process orders?
Avoid them if possible. Most changes are verbal and additional costs are inevitable. Make sure they are made in writing and an estimate of the additional cost is provided so that you are aware of what is involved.
